"From
your ruins you will be built" (Avigdor Meiri, Poet)
In the early days of the
l950's, the Israeli Land Authority had plans to demolish the
old village of Ein Hod and to replace it with a new, modern one. Marcel
Janco
(artist and architect) was sent by the Land Authority to look over the
existing site .
It was then that he decided to preserve the character of the existing
village, to
renovate rather than to destroy. To this end he envisioned the village
to be
inhabited by artists who, appreciating the architectural beauty of the
village and
its historical importance, would make this their home and their working
place."
